Important Information Regarding Polyimide Film

By Jeanette Riggs

Polyimide film has been used for a long time in factories that produce all sorts of products. It is such a popular material because it has certain properties that make it more resistant to heat, cold, chemicals and other substances than other types of tape. The substance polyimide has been made from the early 1950's, and has, ever since, found many uses. The substance is also often referred to as just PI.

Its durable nature is very resistant to chemical substances. Most known substances cause this type of tape no harm, and do not erode it or weaken its structure in any way. There is virtually no way to dissolve it. This means that it can be used for many purposes. High and low temperatures have no effect on the tape either, and it is therefore often used in extremely hot or cold environments. It can even withstand cold of minus two hundred degrees Celsius.

Similarly, the tapes can be used in applications where heat of 400 degrees Celsius is recorded. They do not melt or break down in any way. Moisture is not a problem either, as the tapes are not effected by the presence of water. This property ensures that they form an effective moisture barrier for the parts that they are used to protect.

Most people realize that these films are the ideal material for a wide range of uses. On electrical wires, they are used for insulation purposes. They are also used to cover other electronic devices that need to be protected from heat or moisture. They are very good liners for motor slots, and are often ideal for magnetic wiring insulation as well. Transformers and capacitors are covered in the tape as well. It is therefore an industrial material of note.

The films are so durable that they have even been used in the creation of spacecraft. They are used to insulate wires within this invention that is intended to carry man to the planets that are wished to be explored. Due to their capability of withstanding even the toughest of high and low temperatures, they are suitable for spacecraft and ordinary aircraft as well.

In the automotive industry, the tapes are used for safety and convenience. Parts of a motor vehicle are often subjected to high temperatures, and are also often moving parts. Since that the tape is so flexible, it is ideal for moving parts that are under high pressure. Regardless which way it is twisted, it will not crack or tear. In general, it is used in numerous applications that enhance the safety of workers within an industry, and the safety of consumers who purchase products.

The films are available in various lengths, widths and thicknesses. They can also be offered in several colors, and are sometimes customized to suit the needs of a customer. The type of tape that is purchased will usually depend on the application for which it is intended.

Polyimide film can usually be easily recognized, and should be well marked within its packaging. Its box should state information such as when it was made and by which company it was made. It should function well for two years after its manufacture, provided that it has been stored correctly. Some manufacturers offer samples to companies who will be placing larger orders.
