Megasonic Cleaning Versus Ultrasonic Cleaning System

By Paul Drake

Megasonic and Ultrasonic cleaning are industry processes that play a key role in the manufacturing sector, particularly in the semiconductor, bio-medical, and electronic facilities where cleaning of contamination sensitive products is necessary. A lot of manufacturing facilities are benefiting from these processes, including those that produce products like integrated circuit, hard drive, raw silicon, mask, flat panel display, and other industries where stringent cleanliness are required.

Megasonic versus Ultrasonic

The question you might have in mind right now is: how does megasonic differ from ultrasonic cleaning? Though the two serve the same industries, both differ from each other in some ways and the following are considered to be one of the most important distinctions:

- Both vary in terms of frequencies used in generating acoustic waves; ultrasonic cleaning utilizes lower frequencies while megasonic cleaning makes use of higher frequencies at 100kHz.

- Megasonic cleaning produces controlled cavitation while ultrasonic cleaning produces random cavitation.

- Megasonic and Ultrasonic cleaning systems can be differentiated when it comes to cavitation; megasonic cleaning does not cause violent cavitation effect, which is present in the ultrasonic frequencies. A violent cavitation effect increases cavitation erosion and the likelihood of surface damage to the product being processed for cleaning.

- Another distinction is that, with megasonic cleaning system, only the side of the part that is facing the transducer is cleaned; with ultrasonic cleaning, cavitation occurs throughout the tank and all the sides of submerged areas are cleaned.

While megasonic cleaning is used primarily my manufacturers of integrated circuits, flat panel displays, raw silicon suppliers, Ultrasonic cleaning is used in other objects such as jewelry, lenses and other optical parts, watches, dental and surgical instruments, and the like.

Facilities that facilitate megasonic and ultrasonic cleaning

In general, companies that need these processes hire a third party service provider to do the tasks for them; others turn to wet process module manufacturers most especially those who are looking for processing tools that can be customized to suit their needs.
