Product Packaging & Your Many Options

By Lenna Stockwell

Just about every product must have some type of packaging, and using plastic for your packaging has many advantages. There are many types of plastic packaging and several common types of plastic used to create these packages. Read on and you will understand more about packaging and your options.

Plastic packaging is created through a process known as thermoforming; sometimes it might also be called thermoform molding or even vacuum thermoforming. Large sheets of thin plastic are heated to specific temperature at which they are easy to shape. They are forced into molds and formed into whatever shape of packaging you need. A custom thermoforming company such as Indepak can design and create a custom package for virtually any type or size of product.

There are various types of thermoplastic materials used in the production of these packages. Materials often used are the polyethylene terephthalate materials or PET or sometimes called PETE. Another common material used often for packaging production is polystyrene. There is also the High-density polyethylene or HDPE, another form of plastic material used in the production of packaging materials. These plastic products are recyclable, like the PET and HDPE, and these are packaging materials accepted in most recycling centers in the whole of the US.

Practically all thermoforming companies can produce all kinds of packaging products, from the clamshell packaging product to the blister packs and even the thermoform trays. The clamshell and blister types of packaging products are the most common though. The clamshell packaging type is one used to hold fruit or other food items, and these are also used as packaging for takeout food. These also can be created from thicker and stronger plastic materials, and when sealed, is excellent packaging to use to protect the products inside from damage or from tampering, or even theft.

Packaging that is a mix of plastic with cardboard as backing or a combination of plastic and foil are also needed, and these are the blister packages. The use of blister packs is often done with medicines where each pill is wrapped individually. Packaging with cardboard at the back and plastic in front is also often used in other items. The plastic is for protection and consumers can also see the products packed. A clamshell pack can also be a blister pack, as it only folds onto itself and technically it is the same.

Plastic trays also are a big part of the thermoforming industry, and trays are need for a myriad of items. For example, if you open a bag of cookies, these are often placed in trays to protect the food items. Doctors and medical professionals use a variety of trays to hold syringes and bottles of medicine for injections. Trays can be created to have many sections and each section can be a specific size to fit a certain item securely. No matter what type of packaging you need, a thermoforming company can help you come up with a solution and create a perfect package for you.
